IAN McCALL last night insisted an SPL shoot-out between Dundee and Dunfermline can get the new era of Scottish football off to a flyer.

The man who played for both clubs with distinction has seen his ex-employers jettisoned into a straight fight for a top-flight place after the demise of Rangers.

With the Ibrox club to be voted out of the SPL by fellow members as liquidation looms, a new spot has been created.

Club 12 is the name on the current fixture list but it’s Dundee or Dunfermline who will take to the field when the action gets started on August 4.

The current SPL members will also vote on who should take the place of Ally McCoist’s Sevco 5088 but McCall believes the issue should be settled on the park.

Dunfermline finished bottom of the SPL last season but Dundee were second in the First Division behind promoted Ross County.

Long an advocate of the play-off system to offer more chances of promotion to and relegation from the SPL, McCall is convinced a two-legged clash would show perfectly what the Scottish game has been missing in recent years.

He said: “It’s an absolute no-brainer as far as I am concerned.

“At a time when clubs are looking to generate finance, a play-off for the SPL place would be incredible.

“The crowds you would get for the games would be amazing.

“I’m not sure whether Dens Park would be an absolute sell-out but it would certainly be the equivalent of, say, a Dundee derby.

“You could easily get 10,000 for that game and these are the clubs who would be involved in the play-offs if they were around year-in, year-out.
