When Ryan McGuffie stroked home the winner for Queens in their tense semi-final win against Arbroath on Sunday, our local hero suddenly realised he would would miss out on a chance to appear in the Final of the Ransden's Cup in April against Partick Thistle.

He had picked up a yellow card previously despite an appeal to the official to be a bit more lenient under the circumstances.

McGuffie had also been instrumental in Queen's fine win at Ibrox, scoring with the winning penalty kick.

History is littered with incidents of players missing out on Major finals due to offences in semi-finals.

Darren Fletcher of Manchester United (2009) and John Terry (2012) along with three other Chelsea players all missed out on the Champions League Final.

Ian Wright ,Roy Keane and Paul Scholes are other well known players who missed their chance of glory.

The most costly was probably Argentina's loss of the brilliant Claudia Carneggia for the World Cup final in 1990 which was won by Germany.

There are always murmurs of some sort of amnesty for the final but this would encourage thuggery in the semi-finals so most punters would prefer things as they are.
