OLD TESCO BUILDING DUE FOR REVAMP

Queen of the South are moving ahead with plans for a £600,000 revamp of the old Tesco building at Palmerston. The club have applied for funding from an unnamed source to help pay for the creation of two indoor seven-a-side 3G pitches within the old supermarket.New changing facilities will also be part of the scheme that chairman Billy Hewitson hopes could start within three months. He told Standard Sport: “This is what I originally wanted to happen at Palmerston.“We hope to hear about the funding by the end of June and if it is successful work will start immediately.”Volunteers have been working in recent days to tidy up the building and make it water tight. It is not the only construction work set to be done at Queens this summer. A further half a million pound project to replace the grass pitch at Palmerston with an artificial surface, similar to that planned for the indoor pitches, will start in just two weeks time. The board believes all the planned facilities will help safeguard the long-term financial stability of the Doonhamers and improve their link with the local community. The new pitch will also mean a return to Dumfries for the first team at least one day a week from their current training base in Glasgow.
