Substitute Derek Lyle scored the only goal of the game as Queen of the South beat Hamilton in the Scottish Cup.

The visitors dominated most of the first half on a tricky surface with the Doonhamers stuggling in midfield and showing nothing up front.

Hamilton went close on the stroke of half-time, Alister Crawford's volley rebounding off the bar.

Queens showed some signs of improvement in the second half and superbly organised by skipper Chris Higgins at the back, kept the visitors at bay.

A crucial substitution on the hour when McShane made way for Lyle turned the game in Queens favour. The striker turned home a Mitchell corner on 64 minutes to send Queens into the next round despite some anxious times in the Home defence towards the end.

For once Queens rode their luck at times against tough opponents in a scrappy game played in a swirling wind on a tricky surface but there is more work to be done next week when Accies visit this time on league business.
