Greenock Morton knocked fellow Championship side Queen of the South out of the Scottish League Cup at the second round stage.

Lewis Kidd blazed over the bar from 8 yards in the opening minutes as Queens almost took an early lead.

Morton's Denny Johnstone turned home Romario Sabajo's cross from close range but was flagged offside.

Queens' Derek Lyle struck the crossbar shortly before the break.

Ross Forbes gave the visitors a crucial advantage with a left-foot shot midway through the second period and the midfielder later fired against a post.

Queens were unlucky in the closing minutes when a Russell effort was cleared off the line and hit the undeside of the bar.
