Last updated : 01 August 2010 By Queens MAD

Derek Holmes claimed an early brace as Queen of the South dumped Dumbarton in the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

The striker nodded in the opener on 17 minutes before he was tripped to win a penalty which he converted.

Veteran midfielder Allan Johnston bagged his first Queens goal with a well placed shot on 55 minutes.

Derek Carcary reduced the deficit but a strike from Rocco Quinn put the home side back in charge and substitute Gavin Reilly added a late fifth goal.

Queens progress into the next round after a much improved performance from last week and they should now face Dundee at Dens Park next week with renewed confidence.

Queens MAD Man of the Match - Davie Weatherston - His pace was a constant threat to Dumbarton and was unlucky to get on the scoresheet.
