10 Men Queens Embarrass Thistle

Last updated : 24 February 2008 By Queens MAD

A magnificent rearguard display by Queens kept their unbeaten run intact despite having their Captain Jim Thomson sent off and also losing the
services of influencial Bob Harris due to injury early in the match.

Queens took control of the match from the start on a poor surface which started to cut up badly. The Thistle goal led a charmed life as Dobbie and O'Connor started to carve openings. Then disaster struck on 23 minutes just as the Doonhamers looked likely to open the scoring. The on form Harris had to leave the field due to injury with O'Neill coming on. Queen's manager Chisolm then had to shuffle his side around with McQuilken going to left back.

This change seem to upset Queens and worse was to follow when Thomson went lunging into the back of Roberts who fell like a dying swan. Referee Boyd had a long look and amid chaotic scenes Thomson was shown the red card. It seemed a very harsh decision and several Queens players had a right go at the Official including the sizeable Queens away support who were absolutely incensed. Queens had some tough decisions to make and eventually O'Connor took his place alongside Aitken in defence.

Thistle having been playing second fiddle since kick-off couldn't believe their luck and sensed victory being handed to them on the plate. Queens had other ideas and with O'Connor and Aitken digging in the half ended goaless.

Thistle came out determined in the second-half to make their numerical advantage count but Queens were superbly organised and MacDonald in goal was rarely troubled. Queens in fact had several chances to snatch an unlikely victory with Stewart going closest in the dying minutes.

Queens showed another side to their character with a superb rearguard display in which O'Connor was outstanding in his unusual role as a defender. Everyone played their part however and Queens just didn't have a failure.
