6,000 Watch The Championees Dump Sad Morton

Queens the Champions

In over 50 years supporting my beloved Queens I have never quite witnessed such scenes at Palmerston. 6,000 fans crammed into Palmy and there was a real carnival atmosphere with the Morton supporters playing their part dressed up in a variety of hilarious fancy dress costumes including Superman who had been the ref at the Kingholm for the Dynamos match earlier in the day. Alec did a great job with the music and it was nice to see the Kirkcudbright pipe band. The QOS cheerleaders were also in great form. The main stand was packed full of strange faces who were causing frustration taking up the season ticket holders seats. However sanity prevailed and everyone got a seat eventually. There were women clutching young children wrapped in Queens colours, old gents in tweed suits with tears in their eyes, ex Queens players with huge grins on their faces and loads of young lads and lassies all enjoying the party atmosphere. As kick-off approached the ground was well full and not far off GATES CLOSED status. The Palmerston choir were in full voice as the Queens team took the field as the Morton team sportingly formed a guard of honour. The noise was deafening and it was hard to concentrate as Queens stormed immediately into the attack and bombarded the Morton goal. As against Forfar McAlpine was causing all sorts of problems along with Moore on the other flank. O'Neill was pulling the strings in midfield and with Thompson and Aitken giving nothing away at the back it looked like a stroll for Queens in the early stages, roared on by a vociferous crowd baying for goals. They got what they wanted in 7 mins when WEATHERSON latched on to a high through ball and lobbed over Ross in the Morton goal to a roar from the Palmy faithful which could be heard in Glencaple. Palmerston was now in raptures and a few minutes later they were in BLUE HEAVEN when the impressive MOORE hammered a beauty along the ground into the corner of the net past a bemused Morton keeper. Morton to their credit with several youngsters on view battled hard but they were up against a determined Queens team who constantly threatened to run riot. Queens made several openings before half-time, the best falling to Weatherson who bulleted in a tremendous header only for Ross to pull off a wonderful save and tip over for a corner. As the ref blew for half-time the Queens team walked off to a tremendous reception from their fans.

HALF - TIME 2-0

Queens kicked off for second half into the massed blue army in the home end and continued to dominate although Morton were gradually creeping into the match without really creating very much. Lyle wasn't having much luck in front of goal as he tended to take a touch too many but his distribution of the ball was excellent. O'Neill was giving a virtuoso performance in mid-field and the Morton defence led a charmed life at times. Morton had their first real chance half through the half when Curran should have scored but sliced wide. The Palmy choir were now going through their compete repertoire of songs including YOU CAN STUFF YOUR BORDER TV UP YOUR ARSE* much to the embarrassment of the poor Border TV camera crew who were being given a hard time. Queens were now in the comfort zone and in the 73rd O'NEILL waltzed through the Morton defence and shot into the roof of the net much to the delight of the Queens fans. He was nearly suffocated by adoring Queens fans as he ran into the crowd behind the goal. The home support were now in full voice and to crown a wonderful afternoon O'CONNOR blasted a fourth goal in for Queens on 86 minutes. The game ended in mayhem as Queens left the pitch followed by a few mindless idiots who invaded the field. The field was eventually cleared and our heroes received the Championship trophy and their medals. Everyone got the opportunity to run on to the field later and the players came back on and showered the fans with champers. Long after the crowds had departed a lone supporter was spotted at the home end standing on his own. Perhaps he was having a few moments to himself reflecting and thinking OH WHAT A PERFECT DAY !
