A Frustrating Afternoon Of Missed Opportunities

Queen's Gilmour
Queens crashed to a disappointing defeat at Firhill despite dominating for most of the match. How on earth the Doonhamers failed to score is beyond me even taking into account an inspired display by the Home Keeper Hinchcliffe.

Queens started brightly, cheered on by a strong away support who were suitably refreshed after some splendid hospitaity in the various licensed outlets in nearbye Maryhill Road.

It was fairly evident early on that this was not going to be Queens day as O'Connor,Dobbie and Tosh passed up fairly easy chances to give the Doonhamers a deserved lead. Partick meanwhile were living off scraps and took full advantage of a Queens defensive error as a Buchanan effort trundled off the inside of the post to give the Home Side a very flattering 11th minute lead.

Queens were shell shocked but continued to take the game to Partick but the Maryhill side managed to hold on to their lead until half-time despite the Home Goal leading a charmed life.

Half-Time - Partick 1 Queens 0

Queens started off with a bang in the second-half but O'Connor wasted a great chance to equalise when he failed to beat Hinchcliffe from close range after the Thistle defence had be carved open. Queens really put Thistle through the mincer for most of the second half and but for a combination of poor finishing, inspired goalkeeping and downright bad luck the Doonhamers would have recorded a handsome win.

O'Connor was the biggest sinner and he should have bagged at least four goals but the big striker had a stinker in front of goal. His teamates didn't fare much better with Tosh,Thomson Bingham all missing good chances. Then to rub salt in the wounds of a frustrated Queens support,Thistle sneaked another goal in on 81 minutes when McKinlay powered a header past MacDonald who seemed to misjudge a corner.

Despite the result their were many positives to be taken from this match which was a vast improvement from the display against Clyde. Queens looked streets ahead of Thistle but some appalling misses in front of goal will be of much concern to the Doonhamers boss Chisolm. O'Connor as mentioned before was the biggest sinner but the Big Striker otherwise had a magnificent match. The lack of goals from our midfield men is also of some concern as O'Connor can't be expected to produce the goods all of the time. With Dobbie off the boil we really lack a natural striker but with the transfer window now firmly shut we will just have to grind things out and try something different like perhaps giving Gilmour and O'Neill a decent run. The former struck terror into the Thistle defence when he came on from the bench and he looks as if he can play on either side of midfield.

We have newly promoted Stirling at Palmy next week and looking at the fixtures elsewhere,Queens could jump back into fourth place if they conjure up a win.
