Five-star showing from leaders

Leaders Queen of the South started the year with a 5-1 thrashing of Ayr.

The home side went ahead after half an hour as David Winters headed in Kyle McAusland's cross from close range.

But the lead lasted just two minutes as Chris Mitchell's cross was turned into his own net by Ryan McStay.

And the visitors went into the break 2-1 up as Nicholas Clark headed home from 12 yards.

Allan Johnston's side made it three after 47 minutes as Daniel Carmichael fired into the top corner from the edge of the area after running unchallenged form his own half.

Carmichael had a hand in the fourth as his shot was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Austin McCann and Derek Lyle made it five with a thumping effort from 25 yards.
