Battling Queens Shock The League Leaders

Last updated : 04 November 2007 By Queens Mad

A battling display along with a generous rub of the green earned Queens a surprise but welcome victory over leaders Hamilton which takes the Doonhamers off the bottom of the league .

Queens got off to a horrendous start in 2 minutes when Gilhaney sliced through a static Queens defence to set up an easy goal for McCarthy. The Palmy faithfull feared the worst and Queens looked completely disjointed with the dangerous Offiong of Accies causing all sorts of problems.

Queens however gradually survived the storm as Thomson rallied his troops at the back and although the midfield continued to struggle the Doonhamers were still in the game despite Hamilton's superiority. They may have even sneaked an equaliser as Roberston almost found O'Connor with a dangerous cross. Hamilton were however well worth their interval lead and with Dobbie leaving the field due to injury things looked ominous for the Doonhamers.

Half-Time: Queens 0 Hamilton 1

Hamilton continued to dominate after the interval but Queens were gradually creeping back into the game with Bingham and O'Connor asking a few questions of the Accies defence.

On the hour mark the diminutive Gilmour replaced Mole and the match suddenly took a dramatic turn. With Accies defnce in complete dissaray Tosh placed a wonderful lob to the far post on 66 minutes which completely deceived Halliwell and with Bingham hovering the unfortunate McLaughlan put the ball into his own net. Accies were completely stunned and Palmy erupted a few minutes later when Gilmour cleverly squeezed a shot against the post which rebounded off Haliwell's shoulder to spin into the net for what turned out to be the winner.

Accies shocked by this turn of events surged forward but the Queens team was now completely transformed and confidently soaked up the pressure. Bingham was having a stormer and he and O'Connor should have added more goals towards the finish.

There were several anxious moments in the closing minutes but Queens held out for a victory which for so long during the match seemed unlikely. Accies will no doubt wonder how they managed to lose this one but their failure to kill Queens off early will haunt them.

Queen's manager Chisolm continues to baffle the fans with his team selections but perhaps he should be given the benefit of the doubt here and there were several good performances in the second half with Bingham and Tosh at last showing their potential.

It's onwards and hopefully upwards as Morton visit Palmy next week and another afternoon of drama at Palmy is imminent.

Queens Mad man of the match - Jim Thomson - After a shaky start the Big Man rallied his troops and completely snuffed out the Accies danger man Offiong.
