Gibson on spot for table-toppers

Table-toppers Queen of the South continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-0 win at Brechin.

Buoyed by their midweek Challenge Cup victory against Rangers at Ibrox, the Doonhamers started well with Derek Lyle seeing his close-range free-kick tipped round the post by Michael Andrews after six minutes.

Moments later the away side took the lead when Chris Higgins headed home William Gibson's corner.

The hosts were unbeaten in their last seven games against their opponents but conceded from a set piece for the second time in the game five minutes before half time, after Lyle nodded Chris Mitchell's corner into the bottom corner.

Worse was to come for the Hedgemen eight minutes after the interval when Paul McLean upended Nicky Clark inside the area.

Gibson stepped up to tuck away the penalty, to guarantee the victory, and extend Allan Johnston's side's lead at the top of the table to three points.
