Brighton rocks Stranraer

Tom Brighton spared Queen of the South's blushes to knock Stranraer out of the Scottish Communities League Cup first round with a 2-1 win.

The Blues went ahead against the run of play after 14 minutes when midfielder Grant Gallagher let fly from over 35 yards - the ball nestling in the bottom corner.

The shock lead lasted barely four minutes as diminutive youngster Daniel Carmichael found space to head the home side level from Kevin Smith's cross.

The Doonhamers almost took the lead in the 26th minute when Kevin Smith's 25-yarder was well saved by Stranraer shot-stopper David Mitchell.

Stranraer went close to regaining the advantage when Chris Aitken's close-range effort was blocked before another Gallagher piledriver flew wide just after the hour mark.

But the pressure finally told when Brighton was picked out by Smith and fired into the top corner from 12 yards with 13 minutes remaining.
