BURKE RETURNS TO HAUNT QUEENS

Last updated : 08 August 2004 By Duke Of Galloway

A frustrating afternoon for Queens as they eventually went down to a narrow defeat in a rather dour struggle against a big physical County side. The attendance was down several hundred due to the Dumfries Farm Show as the game kicked off on a glorious afternoon. It was pretty desperate stuff to start with as both teams struggled to acheive anything. Queens looked very solid at the back with Thomson again in tremendous form but sadly we were showing nothing up front. Bowey spurned a great chance but unfortunately the County keeper blocked his shot. Mc Niven also blasted a great opportunity over the top from six yards. On the 40th minute lady luck shone on County when ex Queens Burke blasted in a volley which Scott seemed to have covered but much to the horror of the Palmy faithful, the ball deflected off Thomson and landed in the far corner of the net. Palmy was stunned and County must have been delighted to be one up at the interval.

Half-Time 0-1

County obviously keyed up by their good fortune started to dominate at the start of the second half but Queens were rock solid at the back with Thomson and Reid in charge. Queens continued to have desperate luck in front of goal when a Mc Laughlan lob was cleared off the line and the same player blasted over from close in. Burns and Gibson were brought on as a desperate last throw of the dice but despite some magic from the latter County held on desperately for the victory. Although not achieving the heights of last Saturday Queens were desperately unlucky not to get something from the game. New signing Armstrong looked impressive and is very good in the air. I would like to see him alongside Wood and perhaps we may get the opportunity on Tuesday evening. Queens fans shouldn't be too downhearted as it is early days and did you notice Falkirk,St Johnstone and Partick all lost as well.
