Iain Russell inspired Queen of the South to a narrow 1-0 victory at Dumbarton in the Scottish Championship.

Both sides enjoyed chances before Russell converted left-footed from inside the area to put the visitors ahead after 15 minutes.

Stephen McKenna headed off target while Chris Mitchell and Derek Lyle saw free-kicks parried to safety by Jamie Ewings as Queen of the South looked to double their advantage.

Dumbarton became the dominant force after the break but Bryan Prunty, Paul McGinn and Colin Nish could not find an equaliser.

Andy Graham then saw a header blocked in the closing stages while Prunty twice sent efforts off target as the hosts failed to level, falling to only a second defeat in six league games.
