Jaded Queens Escape With A Point

Last updated : 16 September 2007 By Duke of Galloway

Queens slipped quietly in third place in the league after what can only be described as a dire display against a sprited young Clyde team who at the end of the day were unlucky not to return home with three points.

On current form Queens were expected to roll over the Bully Wee and from the opening exchanges it looked good as O'Connor and Dobbie powered forward and in fact the latter should have given the Doonhamers the lead but for a point blank save by Hutton in the Clyde goal. The writing was very much on the wall, however as the visitors began to exploit huge gaps in the Queens midfield and but for the woodwork could have had a handsome lead.

It was therefore much against the run of play when Queens were awarded a penalty on 23 minutes after McFarlane went down. Dobbie acceptred the gift and made no mistake from the spot.

It was fairly evident however that the game was far from over as the young Clyde team took full advantage of Queens misfiring midfield and the Home Defence had to endure some anxious moments until Half-Time.

Half-Time: Queens 1 Clyde 0

The Second Half was only four minutes old when Paton gave away a free-kick to the left of the box and from the resultant kick McGregor glanced the ball into the net past a hesitant McDonald.

It was now very much game on as the visitors gradually put the Home Defence through the mincer with their speedy direct play causing no end of problems and it was no surprise when Clyde were awrded a penalty after Burns fouled Imrie. The latter player however made a right hash of his spot kick as his attempt landed on the top of the Terregles Street terracing.

Queens were really up against it now but somehow hung as Palmy became very quiet. Queens brought on their substitutes with Gilmour starting to shine on the left and their was some hope in the closing minutes as OConnor,Tosh and Bingham went close but it would have been rough justice to Clyde if Queens had stolen the points.

This was a poor display by Queens by any standards with their midfield misfiring against a young Clyde side whose power and pace was quite impressive. Queens really only came into the game in the closing stages when the out of sorts when Tosh was switched to central midfield with Gilmour operating on the left. The latter player could in fact have won the game for us but it was not to be.

Well we are third in the league but how long will we stay there ? Not very long on this form and there is a lot of work to do before we travel to Firhill on Saturday where we can expect a hot reception from Partick.
