Johnston ends Doonhamers slump

Allan Johnston's 51st minute goal was enough to give bottom-placed Queen of the South their first league win of the season after a surprise 1-0 home victory over high-flying Hamilton in the Irn-Bru Scottish First Division.

The home side almost broke the deadlock after nine minutes when Stephen McKenna headed Scott McLaughlin's free-kick goalwards only for Hamilton goalkeeper Tomas Cerny to tip round the post.

Gus MacPherson's side did manage to force a breakthrough six minutes after half-time when Johnston headed his side into the lead from 12 yards out following good work from defender Alan Reid.

Substitute Nicky Clark thought he had doubled his side's lead moments before the full-time whistle but his right-footed strike rattled the cross bar.
