A two-goal strike by Gary Wood midway through the second half gave Queen of the South a well-deserved victory over St Johnstone.

And both the goals followed almost identical free-kicks.

The first in the 27th minute saw Stephen Payne float a free-kick into the Saints area. Up went Gary Wood, and his header floated beyond keeper Kevin Cuthbert into the corner of the net.

Two minutes later it was the same scenario. Payne again sent a free kick into the box and again it was Wood who connected, but this time with a volley from10 yards.

Saints tried desperately to get back into the game, but Queens stood firm for the points to put them into fourth place.

Saints new manager Owen Coyle was disappointed with the result. He said: " It was a couple of schoolboy errors that led to the goals, but I cannot fault commitment or effort."

Queens boss Iain Scott was delighted to see the result push his team into fourth place in the table and said "To finish there will give us our highest placing in three seasons in the first division."
