QUEEN OF THE SOUTH 1 CLYDE 2

Last updated : 11 March 2004 By Duke Of Galloway
Queens fell to the legaue leaders Clyde in a brusing encounter at Palmy
but the battling Doonhamers can consider themselves rather unfortunate
not to force a draw. With Paton and Bowey in midfield Queens started off
at a tremendous pace and began asking questions of the Clyde defence.
However with almost their first attack Clyde scored on 9 minutes when
the ball landed nicely for Fotherham on the penalty spot and he rammed
the ball into the roof of the net giving Samson no chance. Palmy was
stunned and Queens surged up field but the hard tackling Clyde side
were proving difficult to break down. A Mc Alpine lob just faded just
past the post and Paton had terrible luck as his free kick cannoned
off the bar. Queens had the bulk of the play and chances but lacked
punch in front of goal whereas Clyde's Harty was giving Queens rearguard
plenty to think about. Harty in fact had a great chance to score just
before half-time but his shot slid past the post.

Half-Time Queens 0 Clyde 1

Queens tore into the attack at the start of the half but disaster struck
on 46 minutes when their defence was caught out on a Clyde counter
attack. Smith released Harty on the left who hit a speculative shot
from the edge of the box. Queens defenders said after the game that
the ball took a slight deflection before landing in the corner of the
net to put the Bully Wee 2-0 up. Queens looked dead and buried but
still took the game to Clyde creating several chances. A Burns shot hit the
post and a Wood effort cleared the bar when it seemed easier to score.
Paton also had a couple of efforts but Queens were not enjoying much
luck. Queens were thrown a lifeline on 71 minutes when Clyde's
Kernaghan handled in the box and Burke converted the subsequent penalty.
Queens threw everything at Clyde in the closing stages but so often
they took the wrong option and Clyde survived to record a vital
victory. Queens fought all the way and had the bulk of the play and
made all the chances whereas Clyde took what few openings came their
way and must have been delighted with their win. Queens contributed
towards their own downfall, giving away a sloppy second goal and also
missing a hatfull of chances. It's off to Stenhousemuir on Saturday
to face Falkirk and JC will have a hell of a job lifting his team
after this reverse. Perhaps our luck will change on Saturday.
