Queens Capitulate As Smith Sees Red

QUEENS LOGO 1JOHN BAIRD was Raith's hero as Rovers came from behind to leave Palmerston Park with maximum points.

The pint-sized striker netted two goals as Rovers maintained their 100 per cent record.

The only surprise in a highly entertaining first half was that it took to the stroke of half-time for the first goal to arrive. Queens had gone close in the 41st minute when Ryan McGuffie crashed a Scott McLaughlin free kick against the crossbar. But they took the lead seconds before the break after Dougie Hill hauled back Kevin Smith in the box and the striker dusted himself down to beat David McGurn from the spot-kick.

But Rovers levelled in the 67th minute when home keeper Roddy McKenzie failed to deal with Allan Walker's corner and Baird side-footed home Iain Williamson's cross.

And Baird completed his double with 14 minutes remaining when he capitalised on a moment of hesitancy by McGuffie to lob home the visitors' winner.

Queens' afternoon went from bad to worse when Smith saw red for throwing an elbow at Reece Donaldson, then Baird turned provider to send Brian Graham clear through to make sure of the points.

Said a disappointed Gus MacPherson afterwards, "It was certainly a game of two halves!

"I felt we were on top in that first period and played some good football, but they got the goals in the second half.

"We could well have been three up at half-time but we didn`t capitalise enough on all that good play we had.

"The goals we conceded after the interval were all bad ones and down to individual errors. Our basic defending was poor!

"Their first counter came from a `set-piece` and for the second and third--they were both goals I wouldn`t have expecting to lose.

"Good professionals know that!
