QUEENS HOLD SAINTS IN GOALESS DRAW

Last updated : 18 August 2002 By Duke Of Galloway
Well watched by Saints defence.

Queens survived their severest test yet against an impressive Saints oufit but the Dumfries team came out well from a game largely dominated by the defences. There was almost a sensation from the kick-off when Queens Gray mis-hit a pass right into the path of Keigan the Saints winger. Only a desperate tackle by Aitken prevented a goal much to the relief of the Palmy faithful who had barely got settled into their seats. St Johnstone surged forward with confidence and Queens were finding space in mid-field a premium. However Queens defence sueperby organised by Derek Allan soaked up the pressure and gave nothing away. Andy Goram, despite being barracked by the Saints fans about his waistline, was giving a master class in goalkeeping, his positional sense and distribution of the ball a joy to watch. As the half-time whistle approached goalless draw was on everyones lips.

Half-Time 0-0

Saints kicked off in a determined mood and started to dominate proceedings but the Queens rearguard were in a determined mood and stood firm. Saints forced several corners but all were dealt with easily by Goram and his cover defence. As the game opened up Queens started to threaten and Lyle almost put Weatherson in. Nelly was being closely watched by the Saints defence and was being given little room. Nelly remarked to me afterwards that this was probably his hardest game so far. As full-time approached both sides had obviously settled for a draw and although Queens had a late flurry, Saints held out for a what I think was a fair result. Neither side deserved to loose and Queens can emerge from the match with great credit. They matched their full-time opponents in every department and I'm sure the Perth team will be one of the favourites for promotion. In all a splendid days entertainment in front of the TV cameras on a lovely summers day with a big noisy Palmy crowd. These are exciting days at Palmy with hopefully more drama in the Challenge cup on Tuesday when Dumarton are the visitors.

Note: 7.45 kick-off on Tuesday evening
