Queens Teach The Dees Some Manners

QUEENS BOOKED THEIR PLACE IN THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE SCOTTISH CUP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER FIFTY YEARS AS THEY OVERCAME DUNDEE IN AN EMOTIONAL CUP-TIE AT PALMERSTON IN FRONT OF 6278 SPECTATORS.

Atmosphere was electric as a full strength Queens kicked against a Dundee side who had several of their regulars missing. Both teams looked nervous at the start but Queens soon settled and started to ask questions about the Dees rearguard with Dobbie a constant threat. Dundee however urged on by their huge noisy support were also looking dangerous with Noubissie causing problems on the right. The wind and the rain was making it difficult for good football and there were very few chances for both teams. Dundee finished the half strongly but over the peice Queens looked the more likelier side and really should have been a goal ahead with Dobbie just driving wide with Samson nowhere.

The second-half fare was much better with Queens starting to take command in the centre of the park and urged on by the Portland Road faithful started to create chances. Dobbie and Tosh both missed chances until the former brilliantly controlled a MacDonald clearance on 52 minutes and hammered the ball past Samson as Palmy erupted. With the Railway Line Song belting out from the terracing Queens went in for the kill and Burns almost made it two with a half volley.

Dundee were by no means out of it and MacDonald saved well from Malone. Queens should have wrapped up the game when substitute Stewart had a clear run in but Samson in the Dundee goal saved well. Dundee really had a go at Queens in the final minutes but somehow the home goal survived. Queens eventually sealed a memorable win with arguably the most amazing goal seen at Palmerston. Queens faced a free-kick almost on the final whistle and somehow the ball was hacked clear. McCann gained possession and punted the ball up towards the Dundee goal. Samson the Dundee goalkeeper was still in the Queens half having come up for the free-kick and McCann's shot from almost 70 yards sailed into the empty net as shear bedlam broke out among the Palmy faithful.

Queens were through to their first semi-final in over fifty year and Chairman Davie Rae ran towards the fans as Palmy celebrated big style. Weans, girlfriends, lovers were being hugged and grown men had tears streaming down their cheeks.

Meanwhile some of the Dundee fans tried to invade the pitch and McCann was pelted with pies but this could not spoil Queens' day and despite a tremedous fight by the Dees there is no doubt the best team won.

Again it was a great team effort with Captain Jim Thomson leading from the front. Queens' manager Gordon Chisolm takes great credit as he got his tactics spot on
against a Dundee team who to their credit didn't come to defend.

There were tremendous celebrations in the Palmerston Bar afterwrds and the New Bazaar was rocking to the Railway Line Song until closing time. I must admit this was probably my finest afternoon as a Queens' fan and I look forward visiting the new Hampden for the first time in April.

Queens MAD man of the match - Can't single out anyone as they were all brilliant !
