QUEENS TRIUMPH AFTER DOUR STRUGGLE AT BRECHIN

Last updated : 04 October 2003 By Duke Of Galloway
Queens picked up another three points in a rather dour encounter with bottom of the league Brechin at a chilly Glebe Park. The Doonhamers made hard work of disposing of an Angus side whose frustrating tactic of exploiting the off-side rule spoiled the game as a speactacle. The first half was absolutely appalling but at least Queens were trying to play football in the strong wind which seemed to be blowing straight off the Angus hills. The hundred odd Queens fans who had ventured north were giving it the full wellie assisted by the pipes and drums. Queens pressed hard without actually achieving anything until O'Connor had a wonderful chance with a one on with the keeper but made an absoulute hash of it much to the disgust of the travelling support who were having great dufficulty in keeping warm. At the other end Brechin tried to upset the Kaiser and his troops but to no avail and Scott had very little to do. The first hafl came to a boring climax as the fans dashed off to sample the Glebe Park pies.

Queens started off in better form and started to dominate the game but chance after chance was missed as Brechin grew in confidence and tried to catch Queens on the break. Just as it looked as if Queens would never score, O'Connor rose to put Queens one up in 54 minutes as a sea of blue erupted behind the unfortunate Brechin goalkeeper. Queens were now well in command although Scott had to make his one an only save of the entire match midway thtrough the half. Bowey should have had another goal for Queens and O'Connor missed another sitter as Queens looked for a second.. Brechin's frustrating use of the off-side rule was upsetting the Queens fans and the poor linesman running the touchline next to the famous hedge was getting some terrible abuse. In the end Queens ran out fairly comfortable winners despite Brechin's desperate attempt to con the referee into awarding them a penalty in the final minute. This was not an impressive display by Queens but they were still too good for Brechin and our rivals will not find it easy picking up points at Glebe Park. We are now sitting second in the league and a win against Inverness at Palmy in a fortnight will put us top of the league.
