Iain Russell's double helped secure Queen of the South their second away win in the Scottish Championship this season following a 3-0 success at Alloa.

Striker Russell struck the game's opening goal in the 16th minute when he converted defender Chris Mitchell's cross.

Russell almost made it two for the visitors midway through the first half, but his goalbound header was well saved by Alloa goalkeeper Scott Bain.

Bain denied Russell's thunderbolt early in the second period, but could do nothing to prevent the visitors' forward grabbing his second in the 71st minute when he despatched Derek Young's ball into the danger area.

The visitors wrapped up their win four minutes later when Gavin Reilly slotted home left-footed following midfielder Daniel Carmichael's pass.

A welcome and overdue victory for Queens over awkward opponents.

They can look forward with confidence to next week's cup clash against Hamilton.
