NO WAY THROUGH-QUEENS PRESS

On a glorious Spring day Queens chose to turn in their worst performance of the season and St Mirren ran out deserved and worthy winners. The Paisley side looked the more hungrier from the start and a tired looking Queens side just could not get going. St Mirren got off to the perfect start when Gillies was first to react to a cross from the left in the 4th minute and trundled the ball past Scott although Aitken almost cleared the ball but the referee quite rightly awarded a goal. St Mirren were now in a confident mood and Queens just couldn't string a pass together. O'Connor was ploughing a lone furrow up front and Mc Laughlan was being crowded out by the eager Paisley defenders. As Saints contiued to hold the upper hand Scott saved Queens with numerous fine saves. In fact nobody would have complained if Saints had not gone in at half-time several goals to the good. Queens on the other hand were simply awful and I couldn't remember them having a single shot at goal.

Half Time Queens 0 St Mirren 1

The second half started much the same as the first with St Mirren dictating the play and Queens struggling to get into the game. Queens however with the introduction of O'Neill and Paton started at last to push up and chances were made and missed. Mc Alpine had a great chance but blasted over but to be quite honest Queens never looked like scoring and everyone headed for the exits when St Mirren scored their second goal in the dying minutes through Denham in a goalmouth scramble. By that time most of us had had enough and Joan was already pouring the pints in the QOS bar. To be quite honest this was an appalling display by Queens with only the defence getting pass marks. The experiment in playing pint size Mc Laughlan up front with O'Connor in the first half was a mistake as Queens did not create a single chance in that period. Bowyer and Mc Colligan were strangely subdued with Mc Alpine and Lyle never in the game. There was some hope when O'Neill and Paton came on but Queens were always chasing the game and St Mirren must take credit for a deserved win. As a part-time team Queens don't seem to relish midweek games as everyone looked knackered yesterday. It's all men to the pumps before Tuesday to prevent the ship from sinking agianst Arbroath. It' a good job we have points in hand as Alloa are now making a late run and the nerves must be jangling up Dingwall way.
