Another wonderful performance by those Amazing Doonhamers as they dismantled probably the best team in the league in front of 3547 enthusiastic fans on a glorious autumn day at Palmerston. The atmosphere was wonderful as the teams kicked off but unfortunately the match became a bit flat as defences began to dominate. Caley looked a big powerful team and stroked the ball around nicely but Queens looked far more dangerous and made several good openings urged on by the noisy Palmy crowd. Paton nearly scored with one of his wonderful free-kicks but the Caley keeper saved well. O'Connor,Burke and Burns were causing problems in the Caley rearguard and the highlanders had to concede several corners to keep the eager doonhamers out. O'Connor had a great chance shortly before half-time but his shot was deflected into the side netting. The first hald ended with Caley having their first real effort on goal when a Hyslop cross slipped past Scott's far post.

Half-Time Queens 0 Inverness Caley 0

The game seemed to open up in the second half and both teams went out for goals. Queens still looked the likelier team and it was slightly against the run of play when Caley opened the scoring on 54 minutes when a Ritchie shot took a wicked deflection to beat Scott as a hushed Palmerston held its breath. The heads on the terraces looked down but this fighting Queens team refused to surrender and stormed into Caley. You could sense the alarm bells in the Caley defence as Burns,O'Connor and Burke began to wreak havoc.
On the 65th minute mark Palmy erupted when Bagan latched on to a clearance from the harassed Caley defence to send a glorious daisy- cutter from all of 25 yards into the corner of the net. Queens now went for the jugular and with Caley on the verge of total collapse,O'Connor steered the ball home after wonderful work by Burns on the 68th minute. It was sheer bedlam on the terraces as the Palmy choir wound up the volume. Queens continued to storm forward and in 74 minutes the wonderful O'Connor blasted the ball home after yet another glorious opening made by young Burns. Queens took their foot of the gas and it gave everyone a chance to draw breath. Calry tried their best to crawl back into the game but Queens defence superbly organised by KAISER Jim Thomson held firm. It was therefore slightly surprising that the highlanders managed a goal in the final minutes when Bingham cut in from the left and fired past Scott. Queens however were not prepared to allow Caley a chance of an undesrved draw and Burke almost snatched a fourth goal for Queens just at the death but the Inverness keeper saved well. Inverness can have no complaints about this defeat and I think in the end the score flattered them. The highlanders had no answer to the fighting qualities of this Queens side, who even after going a goal down refused to give up. O'Connor and Burke were immense with young Burns simply outstanding. His passing and defensive qualities make this young man a star of the future. Bowey and Bagan as usual held the fort in the middle of the field and I thought our defence was rather unfortunate to concede two goals. Caley at the end of the day may win the league but this game will be one to tell the grand weans about.

The day Queens beat the Caley to go top of the league.
