Wetherston Mugs County

A late wonder strike by Weteherson was enough for Queens to edge out Ross County and move the Doonhamers into second place in the SFL.

Queens started brightly on a heavy pitch and had an early penalty claim denied when Jamie McQuicklen's cross was blocked by Mark McCulloch. The surface was starting to cut up and both sides were having trouble trying to play football.

The visitors were beginning to get their game together and the Palmy faithful were strangely quiet as they realsied their team had a real fight on their hands.

After the break County stepped up the pace and had Queens under pressure for long periods and Bell in the Home goal had to be alert. However Queens defence with new pairing of Barr and Sives held firm. Stephen Craig of County was denied by a Craig Barr tackle and the visitors had a late penalty claim waved away when Paul Lawson went down.

Queens were just hanging on and wiith three minutes to go David Wetherston fired in an unstoppable shot past Tony Bullock from 18 yards out after the County defence failed to clear a corner.

The Doonhamers managed to hold out for a well earned win and did reasonably well considering the tricky conditions. County surprised everyone with their power and pace however they lacked punch up front with Bell in the Queens goal rarely troubled.

This win will probably come at a cost for Queens with O'Connor,Burns and MacFarlane all taking nasty knocks. Gordon Chisolm's team selection for the Challenge Cup-Tie against Morton on Sunday will be very interesting.

QueensMAD man of the match - Neil MacFarlane - A stand out on a heavy pitch.
