WOODY HEADER BREAKS THE DEADLOCK

Wood - Crucial Winner
A Gary Wood header five minutes from the end of a dreadful match gave Queens three welcome and ended their three match losing run. Brechin set their stall out from the kick-off and began to spoil and disrupt Queens and the first half can only be described as amongst the worst 45 minutes of football I have ever witnessed. Queens just could not get going against the Angus side who looked formidable at the back and dangerous on the break. Queens had a couple of half chances but the first half was a huge disappointment to the 1700 odd crowd and the least said the better.

Half-Time Queens 0 Brechin City 0

The second half started out on a more positive mood as Queens statrted to dictate but passes were going astray and Brechin were giving Thomson and Co some anxious moments. The Palmy crowd were very quite but at least Queens were making chances AND miss them. Burns raced through to bring off a great save from Hay and Lyle had the chance of the match but his weak effort trundled past the Brechin goal. Gary Wood was brought on but it looked as if the game was heading for a goaless draw as Queens forced a serious of corners. It was from one of those corners that the ginger haired Wood scored with a vital header on 95 minutes much to the relief of the Palmy crowd, some of whom were already heading for the pub. In the final minutes the heavens opened and Queens held out confidently in the sodden conditions despite desperate attempts by the brave Angus to snatch an equaliser. To be quite frank this was for most part an awful match which Brechin must shoulder some of the blame with their negative tactics. Having said that, Queens were out of sorts with the passing woeful in midfield. The finishing again was appalling and O'Connor is not back to his best yet. The defence was not too clever either with Thomson making too many errors although conditions underfoot did deteriorate in the second half. Anyway we kept a clean sheet for the first time in weeks and the welcome three points keeps us in touch with the leading pack. It will be backs to the wall next week as we face the might of St Johnstone at Perth but we have a good record up there so I remain optomistic.
