QUEENS RAVAGE THE HONEST MEN

Last updated : 31 August 2003 By Duke Of Galloway
Queens produced their best away display for many a day to overcome a spirited young Ayr side who offered very little resistance. Queens took a stranglehold of the game from the start and to be quite honest were very rarely troubled. For once our strikers were on song and perhaps the Ayr goal keeper prevented a real rout. Queens looked in the mood from the start and urged on by a healthy travelling support had Ayr immediately on the back foot. Ayr huffed and puffed but were getting nowhere against a solid looking Queens rearguard with Dodds looking the part in goal. Ayr in fact very nearly took the lead but for a fine save from Dodds, Queens however were soon in the lead when Paton brilliantly side stepped the static Ayr defence to bury the ball behind Roy in the 16th minute much to the delight of the away support. Ayr tried hard to get back into the game but Queens were far too streetwise and but for some poor finishing the Doonhamers would have had a healthy interval lead.
Half-Time Ayr 0 Queens 1

Queens started the second half looking for more goals but the vital second would just not come and as the game progressed O'Connor and Burke were introduced,.This had an immediate effect as O'Connor hammered in from 20 yards on the 59th minute to put Queens 2-0 up. Queens were now in the comfort zone and pounded the Ayr goal with Roy performing heroics. Burke added a third goal in 76 minutes after the impressive Wood set him up. Ayr got a consolation goal in 82 minutes when Campbell rose unchallenged to head past Dodds. Queens however had the last laugh as O'Connor ran through the Ayr defence in 84 minutes to blast past Roy. By this time the Ayr faithful were streaming for the exits whilst being taunted by the Queens fans belting out ' WE CAN SEE YOU SNEAKIN OUT'.
This was an impressive display by Queens and the perfect answer by JC towards his critics. The rest of the league will also not relish a visit to Palmerston this season on this form and the odds offered by the bookies will no doubt be reveiwed.Queens rearguard looked very impressive with Dodds looking a very safe keeper.Everyone looked sharp and with his pool of players JC has options. Wood and Lyle although not on the score sheet looked very dangerous and of course O'Connor had a stormer with two lovely goals. We have an entirely different game against Stenny on Tuesday with a one off cup-tie in which the home side will be scrapping for everything but if Queens play half as well as the did at Somerset then we should be in the hat for the next round.
