SOUTH/EAST ROUNDUP

A LAST gasp winner saw STRANRAER maintain their top of the table position in the South of Scotland. They came back from losing an early goal when Lee Taylor fired Crichton into the lead in eight minutes with a screamer into the top corner of the net. But Craig Bradley equalised two minutes before the turn and then Derek Dougan got the winner two minutes into stoppage time.

DALBEATTIE STAR kept their unbeaten record but were held to a goal-less draw by a fighting Wigtown side. Star had the ball in the net in the last five minutes but Jak Dingwall's strike was disallowed by the keeper.

THREAVE ROVERS beat Creetown 4-2 thanks to first half goals from Andrew Donnelly (2) and Paul Cook. But the Ferrytoon side shocked them with two goals in the 48th and 50th minutes from Ryan McKie and Scott Mazza but Sam Warren made sure of the points with 70th minute goal.

ST CUTHBERT WANDERERS thrashed Heston Rovers 6-0 with all the goals in the first half while NEWTON STEWART beat Abbey Vale 3-1; MID ANNANDALE beat Fleet Star 2-1.

EXTRA TIME WINNER FOR SPARTANS

SPARTANS co-manager Mike Lawson praised super-sub Donal Henretty who fired them into the next round of the Image Printers Cup.

He scored twice in extra time as Gala Fairydean tested the Premier League champions but finally went down 4-2.

The co-boss said: "Donald came on and after we were forced into extra time he got the vital goals to see us through."

Division 1 side Gala tired in the end but Lawson said: "We were two down to Gala with half an hour to go and defeat was staring us in the face.

"But the lads showed a lot of spirit to come back to come back like that. Gala fought hard and defended stoutly. We had most of the play but turned round still goal-less."

He added: "Gala scored two quick goals and we were up against it. It's hard to be critical for we had warned not to under-estimate them and we didn't. We threw everything at them and finally wore them down in extra time. That's when Donal did the damage and put us through."

Gala struck in the first 10 minutes of the second half with Alan Smith getting both but Spartans came back with Keith McLeod and Omar Kader forced extra time.Henretty hit a goal in each half to clinch a 2nd round place.

Holders Gretna 2008 are also through with a 1-0 win over Preston Athletic from a league higher. A second half strike by Steven Degnan puts the Black and Whites through to the next round, away to Leith Athletic.

Other sides to reach the second round are Coldstream, Eyemouth United, and Ormiston.
