WOOD HITS HIS FIRST GOAL AS QUEENS DUMP STENNY IN CIS CUP

Queens made hard work of overcoming a stuffy Stenny in a rather scrappy affair at Ochilview. Queens got off to a great start in the 4th minute with Wood scoring his first goal for Queens. Wood had a second bite of the cherry when his first shot was blocked but he made no mistake from around 20 yards. Queens were streets ahead of Stenny at this stage and should really have had the home side dead and buried as chance after chance went a begging. To their credit Stenny battled away and were causing Queens loads of problems down the right wing where Mc Alpine had his hands full. It was no surprise when the home side equalised on 25 minutes when again a ball from the right side was swung into the middle where Harty unmarked headed past Dodds in the Queens goal. Queens were stunned and surged upfield in search of another goal but the home defence and midfield were making a game of it and as the teams trooped off at the interval Stenny fans were well pleased with their team's first half showing.

Half-Time Stenhousemuir 1 Queens 1
Queens came out of traps looking for goals but the Stenny defence held firm and the home team looked very dangerous on the break with ex Queens favourite Mallen giving Thomo and Company a torrid time. There were a few anxious moments in the Queens defence but gradually the Doonhamers began to take a firm control of the game. The elusive winner however evaded the visitors until the 85 th minute when Bagan cut in from the left to crash in a shot into the net via the post to bring hearthache to the Ochilview faithful. Stenny competed well but in the end Queens just had the edge. It wasn't a great spectacle but Queens are through to the next round. In passing I doubt if many football matches have taken place with the noise of a fairground blaring out in the background. The crowd was around 424 and I would estimate about 150 or so were Queens with the drummer and lads with the rattles giving good support.
