YOUNG QUEENS ELEVEN HELD AT CASTLE DOUGLAS

An understrength Queens team containing several youth players played out a dour draw at Castle Douglas on Wednesday evening. Queens for some resaon turned up without a goalkeeper and outfield player Hill took over between the sticks. The young Queens team with only three first team regulars struggled to contain Threave to start with but gradually got the upper hand and Payne gave them the lead on 29 minutes with a clever 30 yard drive. Everyone sat back and waited for a goal feast but thanks to Threave this did not happen. In fact the Castle Douglas team could have well gone in at the interval in the lead if Mark Adams had been a bit sharper. The striker missed two glorious chances just before the interval.

The second period was even worse than the first with neither team achieving much with little goialmouth incident. Queens could have added to their tally but poor finshing was their downfall. Threave came more into the game towards the end and scored a deserved equaliser through an own goal on 85 minutes from Queen's Maxwell although the locals swear that Donnelly was the scorer. The game ended in a tame draw much to the disgust of a large crowd who were expecting better. Queens obviously gave this game a low priority as neither the manager or his assistant were present. One pleasing aspect was the form of Paul Burns who cruised hrough the game in his unusual role as a defender. Robertson also had a steady game but it was fair to say no one else caught the eye in a rather poor encounter.
